How to get the best return on investment of Remodeling?

What investment for the best bang for their money when it comes to home improvement? I only $ 1,000, but (as a gift) I really want to spend on the house of my parents. Where should I spend money to get the best return on investment? The house is habitable, but old and everything around it (except frame / foundation / roof) could be improved. We are in central Ohio, if that makes a difference.

$ 1,000 will go not far, but most experts say the best investment you can make when remodeling is in the kitchen and / or bathroom. If the cabinets are old, consider to "re-face rather not replaced. Buy new equipment and make sure you install / replace garbage disposal. If they do not already have one, built in microwave to free up counter space and cooking look a lot bigger. Installing a new floor, preferably something that is not as low maintenance tile wax or wood laminate. If the kitchen is large enough, installing a center island. Again, you probably will not be able to this with $ 1,000, but your money will go much further if you can do the work yourself. My father bought its Menards kitchen cabinets and installed itself when he was 70. I'm not ambitious, I personally do not think I would take this kind of project. Whatever you do, make sure it still goes with the rest of the house. If you go ultra modern kitchen, and the rest of the house is 80 countries, it will seek its place.
