The Coral Castle, Homestead, Florida

Coral Castle is one of the most amazing structures ever built. In terms of achievements, He has been compared to Stonehenge, ancient Greek temples, and even the great pyramids of Egypt. It is amazing, some even say miraculous because it was extracted, fashioned, transported, and constructed by one man – Edward Leedskalnin who was 5 feet tall Latvian who weighed only 100 pounds.

Many men have single-handedly built their own house, but the choice of building materials Edwards is what makes his company so incredible. He used huge blocks of coral rock, some weighing up to 30 tons, and somehow was able to move and set up without aid or the use of modern machinery. And therein lies the mystery.

Edward Leedskalnin and Coral Castle story

Coral Castle is a stone structure that was created by the Latvian-American eccentric Edward Leedskalnin. It lies south of Miami at Homestead-city Miami Dade County, Florida. The location is at the intersection of U.S. 1 (South Dixie Highway) and Southwest 157th Avenue. The structure contains numerous megalithic stones (Mainly limestone formed from coral), each weighing several tons.

Edward Leedskalnin was a young man living in Latvia, where he been abandoned by his fiancee Agnes Scuffs 16 years only one day before their wedding. Feeling broken heart, he left Latvia to live in Canada. After moving across Canada and America in recent years, he settled in Florida.

During his time in America, he descended from the TB terminal illness would, but it was spontaneously cured. Edward said that magnets have an effect on illness.

Edward has spent over 20 years building the Coral Castle, refusing to allow anyone to view while working. Some young people said they saw his work, said he had made the coral blocks to move like hydrogen balloons. The only tool that Leedskalnin spoke of the aid was holding a "perpetual motion" – whatever!

Edward originally built the castle, he called Rock Gate Park, Florida City in 1923. He bought a plot of Ruben Moser, whose wife had helped him when he was sick with tuberculosis. Florida City, which bordering the Everglades in Florida is the southernmost city in the United States that is not on an island. It was an extremely remote with very little development at the time. The castle remained in Florida City until about 1936, when Edward decides to move, and so wanted to take the castle with him. We think he chose to move to protect his privacy because there were ongoing discussions around the earth it should be developed. Another theory is that he wanted to move to an area with more people as it was reported that he had been beaten up one night by thugs trying to steal it. He spent three years moving the Coral Castle structures 10 miles north of the Florida city to its current location in Homestead.

Edward carried on the work on the castle until his death in 1951. The pieces of coral that are the most recent castle, is not among those transported from the site of origin were extracted on the sole property a few meters from the south wall.

He accused the visitors ten cents a head to visit the castle grounds. There are signs carved in the rock Gateway to "Ring Bell twice" and a second sign just inside the property which says that "Adm. 10c fall below. It is clear that trusts the people to pay their entrance fees. It would come down from their neighborhoods who have been the second floor the castle tower and near the door and conduct the tour. If anyone ever asked Edward how he had the castle, he would never tell them. He always replied "It is not difficult if you know how." If he was asked why he had made Coral Castle, and he replied vaguely it was for the sixteen "Sweet".

When Edward became ill in December 1951, he put a sign on the door of the gate "Go to the hospital" and he took the bus to a hospital in Miami. Doctors discovered he was suffering from malnutrition and died in hospital three days later.

After his death, and while the property has been investigated around $ 3,500 was found among his belongings. Leedskalnin had his income to conduct guided tours, sale of brochures on various topics (including the current magnetic) and the sale of a portion of its ownership to 10 acres for the construction of U.S. Route 1.

As Edward died without leaving a will. The Castle became the property of their kin living in America. He was a nephew of Michigan named Harry.

It is reported that the nephew was in poor health and so he sold the castle to a family of Illinois in 1953. But this story is different from the obituary a former owner of Coral Castle, Julius Levine, a retired jeweler in Chicago. His obituary states that Levin had purchased the land from the state Florida in 1952 and perhaps not been aware there was even a castle on the field.

The new owners changed the name of Rock Coral Castle Gate Park, then transformed into a tourist attraction.

In January 1981, Levin sold the castle of Coral Castle, Inc. for $ 175,000. They remain the owners todayIn 1984, The National Register of Historic Places added Rock Gate, also known as Coral Castle, to its list of historic sites.

Castle

The grounds of Coral Castle consists of 1,100 tons of stones found in the form of walls, sculptures, furniture and a castle tower. Although commonly known as being composed of coral, it is actually oolite, also known as the Oolitic limestone. Oliite is sedimentary rock composed of small spherical grains of carbonate of concentric layers which may include localized concentrations of fossil shells and corals. Oolite It is found throughout south-east of Florida north of Palm Beach County as far south as the Florida Keys. Oolite is often only a few inches of topsoil, as the site of Coral Castle.

The stones are held without any mortar, they are simply placed on top of each other using their immense weight to maintain together. However, the detailed craftsmanship is as clever as the stones are connected with such precision that no light passes between the seams. Eight feet high upright stones forming the wall of a uniform height. Even with the passage of decades and a direct hit Aug. 24, 1992 by Hurricane Category 5 Andrew, which leveled everything in the region, the stones have not changed.

Many features and sculptures from the castle are remarkable. Among them, a two-storey tower of the castle where Edward lives. There are walls that consist exclusively of eight foot high pieces of coral. There is a dial precise solar telescope and a Polaris. It is an obelisk, a barbeque, water wells, a fountain, celestial stars and planets, and also Many pieces of furniture. The furniture includes a table-shaped heart shaped table in Florida, 25 rocking chairs, like crescent moons, a bathtub, beds and a royal throne.

The Tone thirty stone

What is most remarkable about the contents of the castle Reef is the massive size of stones that were used in its construction. It is all the more remarkable when one considers that a single man together the entire site using only primitive tools. With few exceptions, the objects are made from single pieces of stone weigh approximately 15 tons each. The largest stone weighs 30 tons and the highest stone are two monolithic stone both standing 25 feet high.

A carries nine tons of bearing structure is the most famous castle and has been documented on television looking for … and That's Incredible! The door is carved so precisely that it is part of a quarter inch of the walls on both sides. He was so well balanced that the child could open it with the push of one finger. The mystery of the axis of the door perfectly balanced and surprisingly easy with which he turned lasted for decades until the door suddenly stopped working in 1986. At that time, a team of engineers has been consultation. To remove the door, six men and a fifty ton crane were used. Once the door was removed, the engineers Edward had discovered how focused and balanced part nine tons of rock. He had drilled a hole from top to bottom of the door eight feet in height without tools Electrical and inserted a metal rod. The rock rests on a bearing old truck. It was outdated in that range leading to failure door turning. The nine-ton gate, with bearings, and a tree was removed and replaced back in place on July 23, 1986. The door has no new in 2005 and has been repaired, but it does not rotate with the same ease it once did. This just goes to show what a great engineer Edward really was.

The controversy surrounding its construction

The structure is considered mysterious by some, mainly because it was said that a man riding throughout the structure. Edward Leedskalnin seems to be very difficult to ensure it has not been observed work. Edward has done a lot of his work at night by lantern light. The Coral Castle has numerous lookouts along the castle walls that designed to help protect his privacy.

There are several theories that believe that Edward built the castle with an unknown form of science. For example, it was claimed he left behind in terms of nature, a "secret knowledge of the ancients. These theories seem to be discounted by evidence such as photographs exist showing him apparently using traditional methods of working as hoist.

There is skepticism about the success of traditional methods of tripods equipped with pulleys and chains that are in the photographs Edward's work. Some note that the tripods do not seem to increase by about 20 feet while the largest stones are 25 feet long and Support vertical. They argue that the tripods are made from wooden telephone poles can not support large stones. There is not enough to reduce the weight of stone blocks rather than a man £ 100 could exert enough force to lift the stones. The three eighths of an inch thick chains that can still be found in the tool room of the castle tower, which is seen in the photographs are rated with a workload 3.5 tonnes and may not be able to withstand the weight of the stones. However, these claims have not been rigorously analyzed by two engineers scientists.

They say that if anyone ever doubt Edward how he proposes blocks of coral, it would only respond that he understood laws of gravity and leverage well. He also said he had "discovered the secrets of the pyramids", which of course could be interpreted in both esoteric or technical terms.

Despite the skepticism of traditional construction methods at least one person, WT Wallington has demonstrated that it can produce the exploits of this nature using simple tools. Given this type of construction method, the statements Edward Leedskalnin and the evidence surrounding the construction of what could be the way he built the castle of coral.

other Information

Billy Idol wrote and recorded the song "Sweet Sixteen" and filmed the video in the Coral Castle. Song was inspired by the story of Edwards' former love, Agnes Scuffs, who was the main reason why he built the structure.
